Appropriate RecordsRecords should be kept of the name of the project licence holder, deputy licence holder and licence number; name of personal licence holder; the species, number, sex, age and identification of the animal(s); the date of the start and end of the procedure; any unexpected morbidity or mortality; a brief description of the procedure; any re-use of the animal used; how the animal was disposed of.
Personal LicenceA Personal Licence is issued by the Home Office to individuals who have attended and passed a certificated training course (or are appropriately experienced). It lasts for up to 5 years. The holder may be assisted by an unlicenced person.
Project LicenceA Project Licence specifies the purpose for which the specified procedures may be performed (e.g. to investigate the effects of new compounds on blood pressure). It lasts for up to 5 years. It is issued only if the purpose of the experiment i) justifies the severity of the procedures involved and ii) cannot be achieved by methods not involving animals.
LocationThe premises must be part of a designated establishment and the room must be on the schedule of those approved for animal experiments.
