The heart hangs by the great blood vessels inside a protective sac - the pericardium which is attached by ligaments to the sternum, spinal column and the chest cavity.

The pericardium has a fibrous layer which is tough and inelastic and an inner serous layer comprising a parietal layer and a visceral layer which forms the outer layer of the heart wall - the epicardium.
