Additional Information

Hypothalamo-hypophyseal portal system

Neurosecretory cells in the median eminence of the hypothalamus are supplied by the superior hypophyseal artery. Blood drains from the capillary network in the median eminence into venules which deliver blood containing neurohormones to a separate capillary supply in the anterior pituitary. This type of supply where there are two capillary beds 'in series' is called a portal system.
