DIRECTIONALITY OF PROPOGATION

This simple experiment tests whether the sciatic nerve preparation will conduct action potentials in both directions. The nerve is stimulated as described earlier (this is arbitrarily called the ‘forward response’). The stimulating and recording leads are then interchanged so that we can now stimulate via the previous recording electrodes and record from the previous stimulating electrodes (‘reversed response’).

  1. Say if you think nerves in the body normally conduct in both directions. Explain your answer.
  2. Explain the difference in the appearance of the two CNAPs.
