Introduction

This program simulates some of the physiological measurements which can be made to investigate cardiorespiratory performance in the laboratory. The results presented are those from healthy human subjects performing graded exercise on a bicycle ergometer.

A standard protocol of work is used in all experiments. The subject warms up by pedalling for several minutes with no workload. This allows them to adjust to a constant rate of pedalling. The experiment starts when the first workload of 20 watts is applied. After one minute the workload is increased by 20 watts to 40 watts. The workload continues to be increased by increments of 20 watts each minute until the subject is exhausted.
