Total Peripheral Resistance

This is the sum of all of the vascular resistances in the systemic circulation. The highest resistance is in the small arterioles which contribute almost 60% of this total. These vessels, which are less than 50 µm in diameter and 1-2 mm in length, are termed peripheral resistance vessels and are the means by which tissue blood flow is regulated.
