The first review in this section suggests that amniocentesis in second trimester is safer than both transcervical chorionic villus sampling and first-trimester amniocentesis. The commentary on the second review points out that although routine ultrasound scanning in early pregnancy is useful for determining gestational age, its benefits in terms of improved pregnancy outcome have not been established.
