Surgery for cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia

RHL practical aspects by Lindeque BG

FIRST CONTACT (PRIMARY CARE) LEVEL

Cervical cancer screening should be performed on primary health care level. Patients identified with CIN should best be referred to colposcopy services which will usually be located in secondary (or tertiary) level facilities due to the equipment requirements as outlined above.

REFERRAL HOSPITAL (SECONDARY CARE) LEVEL

Once the required instrumentation and equipment are put into place, and the health care workers have received training and instruction on the use of these techniques, LLETZ in particular can be used with ease and great success in secondary health care settings.

AT HOME OR IN THE COMMUNITY

In this setting the important aspects are community awareness of the problem of cervical cancer, the availability (if so) of screening programmes, and of the importance of patient compliance with treatment protocols.
