The WHO Reproductive Health Library (RHL) is an electronic review journal covering the field of sexual and reproductive health. RHL takes the best available evidence on sexual and reproductive health from Cochrane systematic reviews and presents it as practical actions for clinicians to take to improve health outcomes, especially in developing countries. RHL includes, among other content, full text of selected Cochrane systematic reviews, commentaries on the Cochrane reviews by independent experts, and training videos to help clinicians master details of manual and surgical procedures. RHL 2011 includes 193 Cochrane reviews and related commentaries. Also new in this issue are WHO guidelines for the management of postpartum haemorrhage and retained placenta and a video on kangaroo mother care.

Antitetanus vaccination in multiple doses (2–3) is up to 98% effective in preventing neonatal tetanus and neonatal tetanus deaths in under-resourced settings. Single doses of the tetanus vaccine are not enough to prevent neonatal tetanus deaths. In addition to administration of antitetanus vaccines, efforts should be made to ensure that women receive obstetric care to ensure clean deliveries.

Available data on the use of different maternal positions during caesarean section to reduce maternal and fetal complications are insufficient to draw meaningful conclusions. Hence, none of the currently practiced maternal positions during caesarean section can be recommended.
