Free-of-charge access for RHL readers to tutorial on assessing research evidence for practice
A key objective of RHL is to promote the practice of evidence-based medicine, especially in developing countries, to ensure that limited resources are not directed towards interventions that may not effective. For a clinician, the ability to assess available evidence for an intervention is the first crucial step in the practice of evidence-based medicine. As regular readers of RHL are well aware, RHL is also committed to providing greater access for its readers to training opportunities in the area of evidence-based sexual and reproductive health care. In a bid to combine these two key objectives, RHL has reached an agreement with StratOG.net − an Internet-based programme for specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology − to provide free-of-charge access to RHL readers in developing countries to one of the tutorials in the StratOG programme entitled "Introduction to assessing evidence".
Authored by Khalid Khan and Regina Kulier, this tutorial aims to provide basic guidance in how to assess critically research evidence on health-care interventions. It includes definitions of different types of evidence and the significance of each type in the critical assessment process. The tutorial also covers: the process of development and application of clinical guidelines; critical appraisal of systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, and clinical guidelines; and how to evaluate and apply research evidence to an individual patient.
In order to obtain access to the tutorial, interested readers should send their full details (name, work address and affiliation) to:
