Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta

Dr Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta, MBBS (Peshawar), DCH (London), FRCP (Edinburgh), FCPS (Pakistan), FRCPCH (UK), PhD (Karolinska, Sweden) is the Husein Lalji Dewraj Professor of Paediatrics and Child Health at the Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan, and Chief of Neonatal Services at the Aga Khan University Medical Centre in Karachi, Pakistan. Dr Bhutta received his postgraduate paediatric training in Pakistan and the UK. He was a fellow in neonatal paediatrics at the University Department of Child Health, Bristol, United Kingdom, from 1981 to 1983. He obtained his PhD for work on the interaction of systemic infections and recovery from malnutrition from the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm (Sweden). Dr Bhutta established the first neonatal tertiary care service in Pakistan in 1987 and has headed that service since 1989. He is currently the Chairman of the National Neonatal Group in Pakistan and the Deputy Secretary-General (West) of the Federation of Asia-Oceania Perinatal Societies. His research interests include appropriate perinatal care in developing countries, neonatal infections and the role of micronutrient malnutrition and early childhood development.
