Professor Indra Malik Rodrigo Goonewardene, MBBS (Ceylon), MS Obstetrics/Gynaecology (Colombo), FSLCOG, FRCOG (United Kingdom) is Head, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, University of Ruhuna, Galle, Sri Lanka. He is actively involved in several research projects in the field of feto-maternal medicine. Current areas of research in the Department include: use of the nitric oxide donor isosorbide mononitrate for pre-induction cervical ripening; the value of the fetal acoustic stimulation test in routine antenatal care and early intrapartum care; intra-umbilical vein oxytocin in the management of retained placenta; age-related changes in bone mineral density, prevalence of osteoporosis and vertebral fractures in women; changes in renal functions during pregnancy; use of customized symphysio-fundal height charts in the detection of small-for-gestational age fetuses; problems of teenage pregnancy and how it could be reduced; folate status in pregnant and non-pregnant women; and health-related lifestyle behaviours among adults and adolescents.
