Overview of the Module
This module builds on learner’s previous knowledge of anatomy and physiology of obstetrics, and basic maternal and neonatal care. The module provides in-depth knowledge of physiological and pathophysiological processes of pregnancy, labour, puerperium and the neonate. Emphasis is placed on the student’s ability to interpret the physiological and pathophysiological processes and their implications on maternal and neonatal outcomes. Indicators of maternal and neonatal health will be discussed to enable learners evaluate the effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing morbidity and mortality. Concepts of community participation will be discussed to enable learners acquire knowledge and skills of conducting needs assessment and mobilizing communities for maternal and neonatal care.
How to Use this Module
The module has 5 units and activities which you must do. You are expected to accomplish the following:
i) Read widely the content area under each unit utilizing books, journals and internet.
ii) Consult widely on each topic including collaboration with colleagues
iii) Do all activities for each unit in order in which they are presented
iv) Keep notes from readings, presentations or activity work in a file as these are handy for revision.
Module Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module learners should be able to:
a) evaluate national and international initiatives that address maternal and neonatal health care.
b) discuss determinants of neonatal and maternal outcomes
c) discuss the processes and determinants of conception, genetics, embryonic and fetal development;
d) analyse the physiological and pathophysiological processes of pregnancy, labour, puerperium and the neonate;
e) analyse management of clients during the pre-conceptual period, pregnancy, labour and puerperium and their impact on maternal and neonatal outcomes;
f) Discuss the indicators for monitoring maternal and neonatal care outcomes.
