MODULE OVERVIEW
a) Module description
The module provides an opportunity for the learner to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes required to respond to the health care needs of children and their families. Nursing management will be based on problem solving and family centred approach. The module will utilise self-care, activities of living and transcultural nursing theories and the nursing process in the management of well and sick children.
b) How to use this module
Each unit requires you to read the required and recommended text as these are directly related to the achievement of the expected Learning Outcomes. Learners are expected to apply knowledge acquired from biosciences and behavioural sciences when covering this module. The learners are also expected to complete all the activities in the module.
c) How the module fits into the BSc. Nursing and Midwifery programme
This module is tailored to meet the specific health needs of children in Malawi responding to the Ministry of Health Strategic Plan and the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy 2017 – 2022. It is in line with Sustainable Development Goal number 3 which aims at attaining healthy for life for all by 2030. It focuses on nursing care of common health problems of children in Malawi from birth to eighteen years of age.
Overall Learning Outcomes
- Explain theories and principles of child health nursing that promote the physical, psychological, social and spiritual well being of children.
- Discuss the commonly used concepts in child health in Malawi in the management of children - IMCI, ETAT, CPAP, PMTCT and EPI.
- Discuss the comprehensive management of the well and sick child in Malawi.
- Explain the basic procedures used in the management of sick children
- Apply the communication strategies used in the management of children and families.
Assessment Criteria
By the end of the module the student should be able to:
- Discuss theories and principles applied to management of child health nursing in Malawi.
- Identify and explain the commonly used clinical concepts in the management of child health problems in Malawi
- Demonstrate understanding of the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care for the well and sick child
- Demonstrate ability to perform basic procedures used in child health care
- Demonstrate understanding of strategies used when communicating with children and families
