Overview of the Module
The module focuses on the investigation of the educator in contemporary nursing. The module provides the opportunity to gain advanced knowledge and skills, design, implement and evaluate learning experiences among peers, with clients in the hospital and community. Emphasis is on the application of teaching, learning and evaluation strategies for nursing education.
The preparation of an advanced nurse/midwife practitioner is dependent on effective nursing education. This module provides an opportunity to the learner to gain advanced knowledge and skills, in designing, implementing and evaluating learning experiences. Issues of curriculum design and review are also essential. Emphasis is placed on the application of teaching, learning and evaluation strategies for nursing education in a variety of settings.
In this module learners will be expected to work individually as well as participate in group teaching and learning activities. Projects will include, curriculum development and review and conducting teaching sessions. Use of information technology in this module is essential.
How to Use the Module
This module has five units. It provides a framework on the topic of Nursing Education and is only meant as a guide. Students will take responsibility of their own learning, work on activities and submit them on time. The units are interrelated and concepts are mastered sequentially. The lecturer’s role is to facilitate learning.

Upon completion of this module learners shall be able to:
1. Analyse theories, models and research findings specific to nursing education.
2. Examine the interactive nature of teaching and learning.
3. Apply teaching strategies in variety of settings.
4. Utilise and evaluate diverse teaching and learning strategies
5. Analyse methods of curriculum development and evaluation.
6. Develop a curriculum which is responsive to the current nursing/midwifery practice and emerging issues.
7. Plan curriculum review taking into account existing regulatory frameworks, regionally, nationally and internationally.
8. Demonstrate ability to utilize information technology in nursing education

Students’ Role
i) You as a students are responsible for your own learning.
ii) You need to continuously monitor your progress and reflect on whether you are achieving the learning outcomes.
iii) You are required to carry out all activities stipulated in the module
iv) Submit all assignments on time
v) You are expected to attend all classes and actively participate in class seminars/discussions
vi) Actively participate in group assignments
Lecturer’s Role
i) Provide students with modules containing expected learning outcomes, content areas, students’ activities, assessment criteria and methods.
ii) Provide guidance and support students to achieve learning outcomes
iii) Monitor and evaluate performance of students’ learning activities
