MODULE OVERVIEW

MODULE DESCRIPTION
This module prepares a learner to practice minimum dependency in the field of mental health and psychiatric nursing. The module will assist a learner to apply knowledge gained in theory to promote mental health and manage clients with mental health problems both in hospital and in the community. Theories of nursing and nursing process will be applied throughout.


HOW TO USE THIS MODULE
This module serves as an important source of information that a learner will need for effective nursing care.

For effective learning using this module, the following suggestions will help the student benefit from this module:
• The units are interrelated and make sure that you have competently mastered the skills in each unit before moving to the next one.
• Do all the activities in the order they are presented (systematically)
• Where possible discuss the activities with colleagues, clinical instructor or your lecturer
• Make sure you read all the cited reference materials
• The references quoted in this module are supposed to be read as support for the module.

This module will act as a resource and guide to a learner in mastery of stipulated competences and skills. The learner should always carry this module with him/her to the practice site and ensure that all competences and skills have been attained and countersigned by a supervisor or a qualified staff by the end of clinical placement.


HOW THE MODULE FITS INTO THE PROGRAMME
The module will help a learner to integrate mental health/ psychiatric nursing theoretical knowledge and attitudes into practice. The module will assist a learner to become a professional nurse who will be able provide holistic psychiatric/mental health care to clients.

MODULE LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this module learners shall be able to:
1. Promote mental health of individuals, family and community
2. Utilise the nursing process in managing clients with mental health problems across the life span
3. Apply various treatment modalities in managing individuals, families and community with mental health needs

4. Demonstrate interpersonal skills, self-awareness and therapeutic use of self when engaging with clients
5. Demonstrate awareness of trends and issues in the development of mental health services in institutional and community settings
6. Collaborate with multidisciplinary/multisectoral team members in providing care to clients/patients with mental health needs
