Module Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module learners shall be able to:
a) analyze environmental, socio-cultural, political and economical determinants of maternal and neonatal health in the community;
b) evaluate international and national initiatives in midwifery that address maternal and neonatal care at community level;
c) evaluate current trends and issues in community midwifery and neonatal care;
d) analyze policies, protocols, guidelines and standards influencing community midwifery and neonatal care;
e) evaluate models of community midwifery and neonatal care;
a) Evaluate the process of community mobilization and participation in the delivery of maternal and neonatal care.
Assessement Criteria
By the end of the module learners shall be able to;
• Discuss priority determinants which influence maternal and neonatal health in communities.
• Analyze the influence of traditional beliefs and practices on pregnancy, labor, delivery and postnatal care in the community
• Discuss the value of women and newborns in the society
• Analyze critically international and national initiatives in midwifery that address maternal and neonatal care at community level;
• Discuss current trends and issues in community midwifery
• Discuss how midwives can advance policy agenda and strategies for maternal and newborn care in the community.
• Discuss relevant research findings that relate to psychological, sociological and cultural influences on maternal and newborn care in the community.
• Explain the importance of establishing the community’s concerns and priorities about maternal and newborn health care issues in collaboration with community members.
