1. OVERVIEW OF THE MODULE
The module introduces you to educational assessment. It will give you an opportunity to examine the role of assessment in education, foundation for educational assessment, cardinal criteria for educational assessments, interpretation and appraisal of assessment tools and results, utility of assessment results, trends and issues in educational assessment and assessing competencies in the classroom and clinical practice. In addition the module will help you do the following: develop assessment tools and procedures for assessing classroom and clinical teaching; use assessment and evaluation data to improve teaching and learning; evaluate assessment tools using statistical and qualitative methods; review factors that influence performance in assessments; evaluate trends and issues in assessments including social, ethical, and legal issues.
Information is provided on how to use the module, expected learning outcomes, assessment criteria, learning contract of the student and coordinating lecturer and content areas for the module. The module comprises 8 units and under each unit there are specifications for students’ activities. Assessment of the module will be by seminar assignments, seminar presentations, and a project. This module is a core module and students must pass the module before they can be allowed to proceed to the next semester.
2. HOW TO USE THE MODULE
You are expected to do the following:
a. Read widely the content area under each unit utilizing books, journals, and internet resources.
b. Consult widely on each topic including collaboration with colleagues
c. Perform all activities for each unit
d. Participate actively in class and during seminar presentations
3. AIM OF THE MODULE
To equip learners with knowledge and skills to develop and evaluate assessment tools used in classroom and clinical teaching.
4. MODULE LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this module learners shall be able to:
a) Analyze concepts used in educational assessment and evaluation
b) Develop effective tools and procedures for assessing classroom and clinical practice
c) Implement evidence based assessment and evaluation using a variety of strategies
d) Use assessment and evaluation data to improve teaching and learning
e) Evaluate test items using statistical and qualitative methods
f) Discuss cultural, environmental, legal and ethical issues in educational assessments
g) Examine factors that influence performance in assessments
