OVERVIEW OF THE MODULE

This module builds on students’ previous knowledge in anatomy and physiology of the neonate and basic neonatal care. Emphasis is placed on the students’ ability to interpret the physiological and pathophysiological changes for advanced neonatal practice. The overall aim is to ensure that practitioners are prepared to practice at an advanced level and equipped to manage the needs of vulnerable neonates in partnership with their families and fellow health care providers.

HOW TO USE THE MODULE

The module has 5 units and activities which you must do. You are expected to accomplish the following:
i) Read widely the content area under each unit utilizing books, journals and internet.
ii) Consult widely on each topic including collaboration with colleagues
iii) Do all activities for each unit in order in which they are presented
iv) Keep notes from readings, presentations or activity work in a file as these are handy for revision.

MODULE LEARNING OUTCOMES

Neonatal Theory

Upon completion of this module learners shall be able to:

a) evaluate international and national initiatives that address neonatal care;

b) analyze current trends and issues in neonatal care;

c) analyze international and national policies, protocols, guidelines and standards influencing neonatal care;

d) discuss the processes and determinants of neonatal outcomes;

e) analyze the physiological and pathophysiological processes of pregnancy, labor, and their impact on neonatal outcomes;

f) analyze the existing frameworks for providing neonatal care.
Neonatal Practice

Upon completion of this module learners shall be able to:

a) demonstrate competence in providing advanced neonatal care;

b) develop appropriate model of care for neonatal care in selected clinical settings;

c) implement change in neonatal care based on scientific evidence;

d) apply appropriate clinical decision-making strategies to neonatal care;

e) demonstrate leadership skills in managing neonatal care units and initiate development programmes for staff and students based on identified learning needs.
